When the cookies were all done, it was mid-afternoon, the sun was already disappearing, the wind was howling and snow was falling. We took a plate with a few of our cookies and a mug of hot cocoa each and sat on the couch by the fire. Hamish stopped the music and opted for another cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie on the TV.
âWell, this is utterly perfect,â Hamish said. He had his legs curled up underneath him, his drink in both hands. âYou know, I really like the snow . . . if Iâm nice and warm inside and I donât have to go out in it. Or drive in it, or shovel it, or anything to do with it, really. But sitting by a fire, drinking hot chocolates, and eating the best cookies ever, really is amazing.â
I chuckled. âYeah, the no-driving thing might be an issue.â
He groaned. âIâll need to buy a car. Or a ute . . . utility truck thingy like yours. Iâll look after New Yearâs. I think Liv has this week off work so if I need to go anywhere, she can drive me. Iâm not too keen on driving in the snow again, to be honest. And I should totally weigh up the comparisons on buying something versus calling an Uber every time I need to leave the house.â
âWell, I donât know if Mossley even has an Uber. There used to be a taxi service, I think. Or a city bus. But I can teach you how to drive in the snow, if you want. Youâll be fine once you get the hang of it. And you managed to get yourself out of Missoula to here just fine.â
âYes, but the stop at here was rather sudden. And it involved screaming. Mostly by me. Okay, one hundred per cent by me, but I thought you were a bear or a serial killer, so . . .â
âOr a serial-killer bear,â I added.
âPlease, dear God, tell me theyâre not a thing.â
I laughed. âAs far as I know theyâre not.â
âThank God.â He bit into a peanut butter cookie and groaned. âOh, these are good.â
I shoved a chocolate-mint one in my mouth to distract my mind from the way he groaned. âMm, so are these.â
He sipped his drink. âAnd thank you for the offer to teach me how to drive in snow. Youâre a brave man.â
âNah. Iâm just used to it. And believe me, you wouldnât think I was brave if I saw a spider.â
âA spider?â
âYep.â I shuddered. âI would be standing on a chair, screaming without shame.â
He laughed. âWell, youâre in luck. Spiders donât bother me one bit.â
That didnât surprise me, given Australia was apparently full of ridiculously large and lethal ones. âAnything youâre afraid of?â
âAh, bears and serial killers. As clearly exhibited when you rescued me. With the crying and the screaming.â
I chuckled and bit into another cookie. âYouâd had a rough day.â
He smiled at me, not looking away for a long moment. âOkay, so more on the gay talk,â he began.
